All about physics

The Institute of Physics stand at the recent Higher Options event at the RDS was packed with information on every aspect of physics – what it is, where to study it and what to do with it.

IOP stand at the Higher Options event

This annual event for 5th- and 6th-year school students had around 30,000 visitors this year and there was considerable interest in the IOP materials. Popular items on the stand were the IOP Ireland booklets 28 Days 28 Physicists and Physics Courses in Ireland 2016.

As in previous years there were many questions about astronomy which is clearly a strong driver of interest in studying physics. This was matched though, by a range of queries on medical physics and it was particularly noticeable that a new IOP publication on Medical Physics - Opportunities for Physicists was in high demand.

The stand was very ably manned by volunteers from Dublin City University, Maynooth University, NUI Galway, Trinity College Dublin and  the University of Limerick who spent much time giving the students a flavour of the various physics degrees on offer.
